Many expats want to continue their familiar approach after moving to Spain: a smart lock on the front door, unlock with the phone, give guests a temporary code. Logical — except it doesn't always work as expected in Spain. Spanish front doors are built fundamentally differently from northern-European ones, and that has direct consequences for which smart locks are usable.
Why Spanish doors are different
The typical Spanish front door is a puerta acorazada (armoured door) or an aluminium/PVC door with a multi-point lock that engages 3 to 9 points at once. The key mechanism sits deep in the door (40–60 mm) and almost always uses a bombillo europeo (European profile cylinder). Northern smart locks are usually built for single-point locks with a different cylinder profile — they simply don't work here, or only partially.
What does work
### 1. Cylinder replacement: Nuki Smart Lock 4 Pro
The Nuki fits a standard European profile cylinder without modifying the door. You only replace the cylinder on the inside — the lock itself stays Spanish. Works with multi-point locks as long as you first manually lift the handle (the typical Spanish motion). Good compromise: smart control + retain Spanish-grade security.
### 2. Full door-lock replacement: TESA ENTR
Spanish brand (Assa Abloy group). Specifically designed for Spanish multi-point doors. Works with fingerprint, code, app and mechanical key as back-up. Slightly more expensive (€450–€650 incl. install) but built for this market.
### 3. Access control for gates: Hikvision intercom + keypad
Do you have an outer gate before the actual front door (typical for villas with a "porche")? Combine a Hikvision video intercom + keypad there. That way you grant guests/cleaner/maintenance access to the outdoor area without sharing your front-door key.
What doesn't work (or works badly)
### Yale Conexis / Yale Linus
Works excellently in northern Europe but isn't designed for Spanish multi-point locks. Result: you can unlock via app, but the 5–9 locking points won't engage automatically without manually lifting the handle. Customers get frustrated by this.
### Cheap AliExpress models
€80 for a smart lock sounds nice, but we've had to replace several after only months in Spanish doors. Weak motors, no IP protection against Spanish summer heat, no English-speaking support when things go wrong.
### August Smart Lock
Only works on interior thumb-turns — Spanish doors rarely have these. Virtually unusable here.
Our recommendation
For 95% of our clients: Nuki Smart Lock 4 Pro (€280 + €80 install). Reason: keeps the existing Spanish multi-point system (insurance-critical!), works seamlessly with your existing key, beautiful app, integrates with the alarm system (Ajax/Hikvision). For villas with an outer gate: combine Nuki on the front door + Hikvision intercom on the gate.
Mind your insurance
Many Spanish home insurance policies require a certified lock ("cerradura de seguridad UNE-EN 1303"). If you install a smart lock that undermines certification, a claim can be denied. Our installations always respect this standard — in case of doubt, ask your insurer for confirmation.
