Hikvision vs Ajax vs Dahua: which security brand fits your home?

    28 April 2026 8 min readBy Senne

Anyone researching a security system quickly stumbles on three names: Hikvision, Ajax and Dahua. All three are A-brands with strong reputations — but they're not interchangeable. We install them daily and know their strengths and weaknesses first-hand. Here's an honest overview, no marketing talk.

    The short version

    • **Ajax** = best alarm system. Premium, wireless, beautiful design, perfect app.
    • **Hikvision** = best camera system for price/quality. Broad range, powerful AI, low price.
    • **Dahua** = direct Hikvision competitor on cameras. Often slightly cheaper, smaller installer community in Spain.

Ajax Systems — Ukrainian premium alarm

Ajax only makes alarm systems, no cameras. That's their strength: 100% focus. Their panels, sensors and sirens are designed as one integrated ecosystem. The app (MobileSAFE) is by far the most beautiful and intuitive on the market.

Pros: clean design (sensors are barely noticeable), 7-year battery in sensors, strongly encrypted radio protocol, perfect app, EN50131 Grade 2 certified.

Cons: the most expensive of the three. A full villa set quickly runs €1,500–€2,500 in hardware. No cameras — always combine with Hikvision or Dahua if you want video.

For whom: premium homes, design-conscious clients, clients who only want an alarm.

Hikvision — Chinese giant, best price/quality

Hikvision is the global market leader in security cameras. Their range runs from affordable turret cameras at €60 to 8MP PTZ cameras at €1,500. Scale gives them massive functionality per euro.

Pros: broad range (small budget to enterprise), excellent AI features (person/vehicle detection, facial recognition on higher models), colour night vision ("ColorVu"), easy integration with DVR/NVR and app.

Cons: politically controversial in the US (trade restrictions), which puts off some business clients. App (Hik-Connect) functional but less polished than Ajax. For alarms they offer the "AX Pro" series — solid but less refined than Ajax.

For whom: best choice for camera systems, especially when you want many cameras for a sensible budget.

    Dahua — direct Hikvision competitor

Dahua is technically very similar to Hikvision (they come literally from the same region). Often 10–15% cheaper at comparable specs. Their own app (DMSS) is functional but less developed than Hik-Connect.

Pros: sharp pricing, good image quality, AI comparable to Hikvision (Smart Motion Detection, perimeter protection).

Cons: smaller installer community in Spain — harder to source replacement parts or local support. App ecosystem feels messier.

For whom: budget-conscious clients with no strong preference and an installer who works with Dahua.

    Our recommendation in practice

In 70% of our installations we combine: Ajax for the alarm + Hikvision for the cameras. Reason: you get the very best of both worlds — premium alarm experience in the Ajax app, affordable high-resolution video through Hik-Connect. For tighter budgets: full Hikvision (AX Pro alarm + cameras). For design-led villas with budget: full Ajax + Hikvision PTZ cameras.

    What we don't do

Mixing Ajax with Dahua, or Hikvision with Dahua in the same installation. Too many apps, too complex for the client. One ecosystem for the alarm + one for the cameras, and those two apps are everything.

    Finally

None of these three brands is "the best". It depends on your budget, building type, aesthetic preferences and whether you want alarm + camera or just one.
