An alarm system isn't a device you "install once and forget about". Like a car, it needs maintenance — and at some point replacement is smarter than repair. In practice we see many Costa Blanca homes still running on systems that are 10 years or older. They often still work, but they're nowhere near the protection level you'd expect today.
1. Your system is older than 8–10 years
Security technology has evolved rapidly. A 2015 alarm system lacks standard features like 4G back-up, app control and encrypted communication. Burglars now use signal jammers that older systems can't defend against. Past the 10-year mark? Book a free audit at minimum.
2. The system has no mobile app or cloud features
Can you only arm and disarm your alarm on-site via a keypad? You're seriously behind. Modern systems run via a secure app, send push notifications, show live camera feeds and let you check sensors one by one. Especially if you regularly leave your home empty — holiday home, weekend house — this is no longer a luxury but a necessity.
3. You get frequent false alarms
False alarms aren't just annoying; they undermine trust in your system. Eventually you ignore alerts — exactly what burglars count on. The cause is almost always outdated sensors or a poor initial configuration. Replacement with modern PIR + radar sensors reduces false alarms by 80–90%.
4. Sensors or batteries need constant attention
Always chasing individual sensors to reset or batteries to replace? That means the electronics are at the end of their life. Full replacement is cheaper than you think — and instantly buys you another 10 years of peace of mind.
5. Parts or software updates are no longer available
Many older systems are no longer supported by the manufacturer. No software updates means known security vulnerabilities remain open forever. Ask your installer whether your model is still "in support". If not — replace it.
